Communities Separated On Announcement Of John Demjanjuk Conviction

The conviction given on John Demjanjuk's role in war crimes divided the two communities in Ohio in different parts. The two American communities of the Jewish and Ukrainian have varied reactions to the Demjanjuk outcome. Before the reaction of these communities is introduced to you, let us tell you who John Demjanjuk is.

John Demjanjuk was born in Ukraine and he was charged in the case of murder of people in Germany during the Sobibor camp in Poland (occupied by Nazi). Though he was accused in the case but no action was taken against him until now. He has been retired from the post of autoworker and since then living in home situated in Seven Hills. Moreover, no notice has been put on his house in all these years.

The survivors of the Holocaust have welcomed the conviction. People who have lost their relatives during the war are happy that the culprits are getting punishment for what they did long years back.

Initially the survivors were doubtful whether the culprit would be convicted or he would be allowed to leave as it happened in Israel. However, Demjanjuk was convicted and it brought a wave of happiness amongst survivors of Holocaust.

On the contrary, there are people who think that John Demjanjuk had not done anything initially and the circumstances forced him to act in hostile manner. These people still think that the conviction given is not serving justice. Demjanjuk is being used only as a puppet and he has done nothing wrong during Nazi war.

Ragini MMS Movie Review By Taran Adarsh:

I strongly feel that if you do not have a colossal budget on hand, then you need to make up for that with an even better concept. Let's not forget, big ideas work big time. In fact, hi-concept films made in skeletal budgets is the new mantra in Bollywood. The next time budgetary constraints prevent you from working with an A-list star, don't sweat. Formulate hi-concept films instead! Take an interesting concept. Make it within a stipulated budget, not exceeding Rs 2 cr/Rs 3 cr. Spend a good amount on its marketing. Create ample awareness. Chances are you might find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Ekta Kapoor has been doing this successfully. Recall LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA. Now RAGINI MMS, which has been made at a shoestring budget of Rs 1 cr [or slightly more] in two versions - Hindi and Telugu. Ekta's new offering is ma [...]

A Tale of Today’s Delhi, Framed by the ‘Mahabharat’

Courtesy Random House India

Writers and film-makers looking to tell stories about modern India turn again and again to the past, and in particular, to one ancient epic: the "Mahabharat."

A new novel about contemporary Delhi, “Leela's Book,” uses one particular episode—the transcribing of the epic by the elephant-headed god Ganesh—as a framing device.

The author, Alice Albinia, also mimics oddities of the epic itself. Ved Vyasa, the sage who is supposed to have composed and recited its thousands of verses to Ganesh and who is also a personage in the epic—the father of the half-brothers Dhritrashtra and Pandav, whose sons waged the war at the heart of the epic—also appears in her novel as the modern-day Sanskrit academic Ved Vyasa Chaturvedi.

Chief Mentor: For Developing Markets, Mobile Operators or Banks?

By Kosta Peric

The opportunity to use mobile technology to enable financial inclusion among the world's unbanked population is huge. Of the 6.9 billion people on our planet, just 30% (2.1 billion) have bank accounts, while 75% (5.2 billion) have mobile phones.

In developing markets, mobile banking could bring about a fundamental shift in the consumer experience, giving many millions of people who have never had access to bank accounts or to credit and debit cards the opportunity to quickly, easily and efficiently pay for goods and services and tap into the convenience economy that those in developed countries take for granted.

But it's still not completely clear from which industries the mobile banking leaders will come. And a major stumbling block for the natural providers of banking services–the banks themselves–appears to be ongoing uncertainty about how to really make financial inclusion pay.

Traditional retail banking business models, based on making money from floats and interest – clients with either large balances or a large capacity for credit – won't work for the unbanked segment. So which business models work? And can the banks work within them?

Let's take one of the best-known mobile banking success stories – M-PESA in Kenya. In March 2007 Safaricom, the leading mobile operator in Kenya, launched an SMS-based money transfer system that enables consumers to deposit, send and withdraw funds using their mobile phones. Use of M-PESA skyrocketed, with the system quickly being adopted by more than 35% of Kenya’s adult population.

The winner here is clearly the mobile operator. And the business model that has proved so successful is 'pay-per-use'. M-PESA doesn't charge for account opening or maintenance, or require a minimum balance. It charges only when a customer does something, like making a withdrawal or a payment. For banks, is mobile an opportuni [...]
