Do check out from the people in your community as to when they are celebrating this festival.Dhanteras is on Monday, Kartik Kishna Paksha, 24th October 2011 .In the North India, Dhanteras is celebrated with full faith and enthusiasm on Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha. Apart from Dev Dhanvantri, Goddess Lakshmi and God Kuber are worshipped on this day. Yam Dev is also offered Deep Dan on this day. it is believed, worshipping Yam Dev on this day cancel any premature death. After worshipping Yam Dev, a lamp should be lit on the entrance door facing the south direction for the whole night. Few coins and kodi are put in this lamp.

Dhanteras is the beginning or the first day of 5-day Diwali celebrations. It is also called as Dhantroyodasi as the day is 13th lunar day of dark fortnight(Krishna paksha) of Ashwin month. On this day, some people worship Dhanvantri while some begin the auspicious celebrations of Diwali.

Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as 'Chhoti Diwali' (small Diwali) or Kali Chaudas is a Hindu festival, which falls on before a day of the festival of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna killed the demon Narkasur so it's celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi and also Goddess Kali killed the wickedest or Asura Raktaveeja.
Rituals – On this day a small light lit on the main entrance door with four wicks in such a way that its wick point out four directions likewise north east west and south.Diwali is a festival, which brings a series of festivals with it. One after another we get a chance to celebrate five festivals together. Narak Chaturdashi is one of these festivals and it is celebrated on the second day of Diwali celebrations, just one day before the actual Diwali celebrations. The Narak Chaturdashi, falls on the fourteenth day of the Hindi month, Kartik is more popular by the name of Chhoti Diwali. It is celebrated with same zeal and enthusiasm as the main Diwali but it is on comparatively lower scale. Just like Diwali people light diyas on Chhoti Diwali to fill their homes with light and worship Goddess Laxmi.
